APPLYING FOR YOUR NEW JERSEY FIREARMS PURCHASER’S IDENTIFICATION CARD (FID) & PISTOL PERMITS

Updated: 3 days ago

Congratulations on making the decision to exercise your Constitutional Right to own a firearm.

Beginning in 2019, the State of New Jersey has streamlined the process, making it easier than ever, placing everything within easy reach on-line.

Follow these step-by-step instructions and it will only take you 15 minutes to complete the entire application process and have you on your way to responsible firearm ownership. This short document, covering items A through D below is all you will need. Please come speak with us face-to-face to discuss what E, F and G might mean for you.

STEPS TO RESPONSIBLE FIREARM OWNERSHIP

A. GATHERING INFORMATION NEEDED TO FILL OUT FORM

B. WHERE TO FILL OUT THE APPLICATION

C. MAKING AN APPOINTMENT FOR DIGITAL FINGERPRINTS

D. FOLLOWING UP WITH LOCAL P.D.

E. SELECTING AND PURCHASING YOUR FIREARM

F. SAFE HOME PREPARATION

G. FIRST INSTRUCTIONAL CLASSES TO TAKE.

Good luck and welcome to responsible firearms ownership! See you soon.

A. GATHERING INFORMATION NEEDED

Most everything you need to fill out “STS 033 Form” on the New Jersey State Police website you already know – because it is information about you!

There are only three other pieces of info you need to track down from outside sources.

1. ORI Number: The unique identifier number for your local Police Department, which you place on the the application so the State Police knows where to send your License and Pistol Purchasing Permits, for pickup.

Use this link to find the ORI number you need. It lists all 50 states. Navigate to New Jersey, then your County and, finally, your Town.

You will find 2 columns of numbers. Write down the value in the far-right column, with 9 alphanumeric characters. Secaucus, for example, is NJ0090900.

2 & 3. Two References: You need to provide two references who will recommend you as a responsible candidate for gun ownership. They will need to respond to a 10 question survey via email from the State Police.

· YOU must provide: Complete legal name, home address, contact phone, contact email for 2 people;

· THEY must be: Residents of NJ, not family members, well acquainted with you for a substantial period of time (the longer the better)

Side note: They do not have to be a police officer, lawyer, judge etc… While that might not hurt, it will not speed up your process any, nor get you approved if there any irregularities.

B. WHERE TO FILL OUT APPLICATION

Please use this link to visit the State Police application portal. https://www.njportal.com/NJSP/FARS

If you need help, call us at the store 201.735.1875 option 3 (the gun store) and let them know you need help with the application. They will schedule a return phone call, or may even be able to help you on the spot!

C. MAKING AN APPOINTMENT FOR DIGITAL FINGERPRINTS

When you finish filling out the application, a new page will pop up with a blinking blue arrow asking you “print now”. It will be a PDF with information to help you make your digital fingerprint appointment. Both print it AND save a copy of PDF to your desk top.

In the body of the PDF, there will be a hyper link in blue, which will direct your internet browser to a website where you can make an appointment.

IMPORTANT: once you enter your home zip code, the site will respond with several locations for you ranked by distance, closest to farther away. Check on more than one location, as the closest might be very busy, and one just a bit further down the road might have time available tomorrow.

You will pay for your fingerprints the day of the service, in person. Cost is approximately $61.00.

You will receive an email once your background check is complete. If all went well, then the final step is for you to pickup your FID and pistol purchasing permits at your Local P.D.

D. FOLLOWING UP WITH LOCAL P.D.

It is your Constitutional Right to own firearms. However, that might not necessarily mean that your local P.D. is not concerned with the number of new FID applications and having more firearms owners within the communities, understandably.

It is not unheard of the process stalling at your local P.D. Now more than ever, with the Covid-19 situation stressing thin resources, we all need to be understanding. Just remember to call once per week and be polite, but persistent.

Get the officer’s name in charge of coordinating firearms permits for the Chief’s signature, when he works, his extension and his email.

The Police Departments know that they must provide you your approved FID and permit. You will find your name moving to the top of the signature pile with consistent calling.

Best of luck. Stay in touch.

Be safe.
